Navigating Your Health Benefits - Your Experience

Most people do not fully understand their benefits package.

Identify a statement that fits your problem or concern and navigate to the corresponding section with helpful tips and information.

  1. Plans and Packages
  2. Choosing a Doctor
    • When choosing a doctor, I do not have enough information on their experience level, track record, etc. to make an informed choice. See: At the doctor
  3. Gathering Information
  4. Doctors Visits and Emergency Services
    • I wish I had a 24-hour hotline to call to speak with a nurse or other medical professional. See: Emergency services
    • I go to the emergency room when I can't get in to see my doctor. See: Not seeing your doctor
    • Sometimes it's hard to know if I really need to go to the emergency room. See: Emergency services
  5. Making an Appointment
    • I have difficulty getting an appointment with a doctor or specialist within a reasonable amount of time. See: At the doctor
    • I've had difficultly getting a follow-up medical test within a reasonable amount of time. See: At the doctor, Getting lab work/tests
  6. Arrival, Check-in, Waiting
    • I show up on time for doctor's appointments, but have to wait a long time before seeing the doctor. See: In the waiting room
    • I have to fill out a lot of forms with repeat information. See: In the waiting room
  7. Before My Visit
    • Waiting in the waiting room, then waiting again once I'm in the examining room. See: In the waiting room
    • More often than not, I see a physician assistant rather than my real doctor. See: Not seeing your doctor
  8. During My Visit
    • I wish I had more information so I could ask my doctor the "right" questions. See: At the doctor
    • I don't feel comfortable enough to ask my doctor questions. See: At the doctor
    • I want to ask questions, but feel that my doctor does not have (or want) to take the time to answer them. See: At the doctor
    • My doctor says follow-up is medically necessary, my insurance says it is not a covered benefit. See: Special services
  9. After My Visit
    • I have to go to my doctor to get a prescription for a lab test, then go elsewhere to have the test performed and return to the doctor a week or so later for the results. See: Getting lab work/tests
    • Could some of these tests have been scheduled prior to the doctor visit instead of afterward? See: Getting lab work/tests
  10. Prescriptions
    • My doctor recommends a drug that isn't covered, or costs a lot. Then I have to get back in touch with my doctor to see if another medication is appropriate. See: Doctor-recommended prescriptions
    • I use a mail-order prescriptions drug service but feel that they won't fill it right and it might get lost in the mail. See: At the drugstore
    • I want to talk to a pharmacist about my needs. See: At the drugstore
  11. Payment
  12. Personal Touch
    • Neither the doctor nor insurance company ever follows up with me after treatment to see how I'm doing. See Special services
  13. Speak Up!
    • I have a billing dispute with my health insurance company. See: Appeal
