If you are expecting an addition to your family, you're likely to spend some time baby-proofing your home. You'll put cleaning products and medications out of baby's reach, hide small objects and cover electrical outlets. It is just as important to baby-proof your health insurance, to make sure your benefits are family-friendly now and as your family grows.
Here are some important things to think about and discuss with your Human Resources (HR) director or health plan provider to prepare for parenthood:
- Are routine procedures and blood work covered during pregnancy?
- What types of testing are covered during pregnancy to assess the baby's condition and overall health?
- Are prescription drugs covered and what is the co-payment amount?
- Is there a list of health care facilities, such as hospitals or birthing centers, that you are required to use? Or can you choose your own?
- Does your plan offer comparative data to help you choose a doctor or hospital?
- Does your health plan provider offer special programs, tools, websites or other information for pregnant women?
- Does your health plan provider offer guidelines for recommended care?
- Do you need to let your health plan provider know when you are admitted into the hospital?
- Does your plan cover routine health care procedures for you and your infant?
- How much time off does your employer offer for maternity/paternity leave? How much time does your employer offer with full pay?
- Does your health plan provider cover medical expenses relating to adoption?
As answers to these questions vary by insurance plan, and sometimes and by state law, talk to your health plan provider or your HR or benefits director at work, or do some research on your health plan's website. While the website may not have your exact plan listed, you may be able to obtain general information.
